“It’s not just nostalgia for mac and cheese and fried bologna sandwiches, although recipes for both are in there. The book is full of recipes that most people could cook at home, and be happy they did. Peanut butter chocolate chip cookies? Check. A chopped salad? Yes. Dijon salmon? Uh-huh. Faux-tisserie chicken and vegetables? Here for it.” – Quartz

Glad I added this cookbook to my collection. It is both entertaining and educational.

I bought this to be a gag gift for my mother after she signed us up for a cookbook exchange and I got her name. The intent was to get something that would make her laugh, but also have nutritional, useful, and unique recipes. I expected something silly to come in the mail, but this book is “legit” as Snoop himself would say. My mom owns an in-home bakery, and I am the only one who cooks in a household of four college students, therefore a book that could handle being passed around the kitchen, and flipped through regularly without the cover or pages deteriorating or damaging easily. As a very traditional Midwestern family, we also enjoy recipes that carry tradition or sentiment. Crook to Cook has all of these. Each recipe comes with a story of its significance to the rapper’s life, as well as an in-depth breakdown of basic ingredients needed for each section, so you can be sure you have enough of everything in stock. The book is very visually pleasing. Every recipe came with a visual to follow, as did the fun “what’s in my pantry” section, that came with each chapter. This was extremely fun to look at and inviting. The recipes all have proven unique, but not challenging, as other reviews promised. The book offers a lot of variety in meal types as well. The dinner section is especially diverse, with everything from mac and cheese, to lobster tail. Browsing the table of contents, I was concerned that very few of the recipes were as simple as their promotion stated, but each has proven to be the same level of difficulty with varying levels of prep time necessary. Physically, the book itself was well constructed. Though technically ‘paperback’ the cover is actually a thick vinyl, and the pages a lightweight cardstock. This made the book seem more durable, and less susceptible to damage from food residue to humidity from cooking. The cover seems as though it could easily be wiped down if a spill were to occur. The binding was thick but not stiff and weighted just enough that I could leave the book open on my counter and it would hold the page I had turned to. Before passing the gift on to my mother, my roommates and I all looked through it, and the binding showed no signs of creasing. Overall I would say this book exceeded expectations and was well worth the purchase.

Fans of Snoop Dogg have known for years that Snoop loves to cook. And it’s been pretty much inevitable since the premiere of Martha and Snoop’s Pot-Luck Dinner Party that we would get a cookbook from Snoop, with or without Martha Stewart. Lo and behold: From Crook to Cook: Platinum Recipes from Tha Boss Dogg’s Kitchen (with “Opening Words” by Martha Stewart). Co-written by Ryan Ford, this volume from Chronicle Books is packed with recipes, in standard categories like breakfast, lunch, dinner, and desserts (including a section in each category called “OG Munchies), and additional categories for drinks (including “OG Gin and Juice,” of course) and parties. As you might expect, many of the recipes have tongue-in-cheek names, like “Hey Auntie Banana Puddin,” “Baby Got Back Ribs,” and “Spaghetti De La Hood.” There are also nods to Snoop’s favorite herb throughout. For example, Snoop’s “greatest recipe,” the “Bow Wow Brownies and Ice Cream” instructs home cooks that adding “a sprinkle of Snoop’s herbs and spices” will make the recipe even better and encouraging them to “Go get baked!”The book isn’t just gimmicked, however. The recipes are legit, and each one is photographed in full color, with clear, easy-to-follow instructions. Each recipe is preceded by a paragraph about why the recipe is included – whether it’s “a certified hood classic” or a recipe encountered for the first while on tour that has become one of his favorites. It’s a fun, eclectic collection. One of my favorite things about the book is that when I read the introductions, I can hear Snoop’s voice in my head – he translates very well to the page. I also loved the pictures of what’s in Snoop’s pantry and refrigerator and his notes about why each item deserves a place in his kitchen.Whether you’re interested in the cookbook for kitsch value or you want to eat like tha Boss Dogg, From Crook to Cook is a fun addition to your cookbook collection!

I love this cookbook. I actually borrowed this from a friend, and then ended up just buying it for myself. I have made multiple recipes from this book. I included a picture of his orange chicken. I have also made the spaghetti and meatballs twice (and plan on making it again and again!), the peanut butter choc. chip cookies, and the gumbo. All of them are seriously so good. No, there is no “special” ingredients, just amazingly delicious food. Was actually thinking of doing a “Snoops Thanksgiving” this year! Would DEFINITELY recommend and would absolutely gift this to family and friends.
